I Wasted $18,000 on Office Appliances: Delonghi Dedica, Space Heaters, and the Checklist I Needed

It's tempting to think you can just compare prices and pick the lower one. You can — just make sure you're comparing the right numbers. Not the purchase price. The lifetime cost. And lifetime cost includes the obvious stuff: electricity, repairs, parts. Plus the less obvious stuff: the grinder you didn't budget for, the pans that don't work with the cooktop, the time lost when a machine's down. I missed all of that, repeatedly.

The espresso machine I almost blamed (it wasn't the machine)

I'm not saying cheap is always wrong. It's not. If you're buying for a temporary space, a project site, or a break room used twice a week, the budget option is the correct answer. The total-cost rule only really matters when something runs daily, heavily, or for years.

Context is everything. The same $60 space heater that's a money pit in a drafty office is a reasonable purchase for a one-day event in a cold warehouse. Match the tool to the situation, not to the spec sheet.

And before you order anything, ask what the appliance needs to work. The grinder for the espresso machine. The pans for the cooktop. The electricity for the heater. The cycle time for the washer. Those are the details that turn a good machine into a usable one — or a spec-sheet hero into an $18,000 regret.

So bottom line: do the math, budget for the whole system, and be honest about how often you'll actually use it. Took me six years and 12 documented mistakes to figure that out. Hopefully you can skip most of the journey.
